5 Great Reference Books on Life Insurance

Posted by Desiree Baughman on Jan 27, 2012

Although reading a book on insurance may sound as exciting as reading your actual insurance policy, keeping one or two around for reference is an excellent idea.

Even though these books aren’t likely to be shelved next to a James Patterson novel, keep at least one on your bookshelves and you’ll be on your way to becoming a stronger, more informed insurance consumer.

Here are five books on life insurance that will help explain and clarify this important tool for protecting your family and assets.

1.)    “Questions and Answers On Life Insurance” Tony Steuer, 2010

This book was originally written over ten years ago, but remained so popular it’s now in its 3rd edition. It’s literally filled cover to cover with easy to understand scenarios, explanations, and definitions. Regardless of whether you’re a new life insurance policy holder or an experienced one, this book will surely teach you something new.

2.)    “The New Life Insurance Investment Adviser” Ben Baldwin, 2001

Though this dates from 2001, this great reference tool is filled with information that’s still true today. Baldwin covers the basics of life insurance, explaining variable, universal, term life, and whole life policies. The majority of purchasers on Amazon.com who bought this book gave it ‘5 stars.’ One Amazon reviewer even wrote a review stating that her financial adviser was impressed by the questions she developed from using this book, and he ended up buying the book himself.

3.)    “The Life Insurance Handbook” Louis Shuntich, 2003

This is truly a handbook: it’s less than a hundred pages long, but contains all the basics you really need to know. This is a great resource for those who need to learn about life insurance products for the first time, as it will give you enough simple information to get started.

4.)    “lifemaps” Michael Antoniak, Mark Levine, Stephen M. Pollan, 2002

Although this book provides information on an array of other projects and situations, it’s incredibly useful. If you’re attempting to take care of some very important things like buying life insurance, then this is the book for you. This book actually simplifies a sometimes complex situation, and is a good building block for gaining more knowledge about insurance. Reviewers on Amazon.com have rated the book with quite a few five stars, and find the personal finance section quite helpful.

5.)    “Live Your Life Insurance: An Age Old Approach Revitalized” Kim D. H. Butler, 2011

Written by the founder and president of a financial planning firm who has over 15 years of experience in the industry, this book is becoming a well-known reference tool for consumers who are attempting to understand possibly the most complicated line of insurance. Published in March of 2011, this book goes beyond simply explaining and defining each type of life insurance, but also truly helps the readers gain a comprehensive understanding. Based on the philosophy that the “first beneficiary of your life insurance policy should be YOU,” you’re likely to feel empowered and knowledgeable after even just skimming the book.
